Lead singer of MercyMe Bart Millard was at his mother's bedside as she passed away recently.

"My sweet mom went to be with Jesus this morning around 5:30 am," said Millard on Instagram one week ago. "Thankful my brother and I were with her."

Millard didn't always have a good relationship with his mother, as she left him in his early childhood with his abusive father. This was made evident to fans after the release of the movie I Can Only Imagine

"Even more thankful she’s now with so many that have been cheering her on from Heaven. She’s now a bigger part of my future than of my past. I love you mom."

Millard also published a book after the movie's release which went into greater detail about his early life years. The musician lived with his mother up until the third grade before she chose to move away with her third husband and leave her sons to stay with their father, Arthur.

In an interview with The Christian Post, Millard realized a few aspects about his mother simply watching the film.

"My mom is a very huge part of my life now and when I was watching the movie I was really scared because I didn't really realize how much of a victim she really was. She feared for her life and she had to get out."

The two watched the film together, and while Millard was afraid of what she would think of the portrayal, they both shared healing tears.

"She just kept saying, 'Yeah, that's how it happened, that's right. She actually loved the movie. She told me, 'I'm heartbroken that I wasn't a bigger part of it, but that's what happened. I was so scared for my life and I'm so glad that we have each other now.'"
