The Athabasca RCMP arrested one male suspect after responding to a report of a stolen vehicle from Westlock.

On Thursday January 30, 2020 at approximately 2:56 p.m., Athabasca RCMP were advised by Westlock RCMP that a stolen vehicle from the Westlock area was on Highway 663 southwest of Athabasca. After they arrived, the suspect vehicle turned North onto Highway 812 and continued travelling at high rates of speed to highway #2 towards Slave Lake.

RCMP Air Services and Crime Reduction Unit from EAD were called in to assist. Emergency equipment was activated and the suspect vehicle continued to travel at high rates of speed with disregard for the public. The vehicle continued North and turned towards Smith where he lost control of his vehicle and hit the ditch. Athabasca RCMP were able to arrest the male on scene without incident. 

The 20 yr old man from Calling Lake, Alberta was charged with 3 Criminal Code offences which include operation of a motor vehicle while pursued by police, dangerous driving, and possession of stolen property over $5000.

He remains in custody for a hearing with the Justice in Athabasca. His name can't be released as charges were not officially laid at the time the release was written.
