Kenyan police chief fights crime on the streets using only the Bible and the power of God.

The job of keeping the residents of Maralal, Samburu County safe, is no easy task. Gunfights are heard daily, robbery is ordinary, and extortion is expected. Yet, one man, Chief Inspector William Sifuna, takes his patrols to another level.

He is known as "the preaching policeman" and his best strategy is biblical. Amongst the wide variety of crimes in Maralal, the most popular is livestock robbery. To combat these thefts, Sifuna would follow the instructions of the Word. He speaks to the culprit, commands them to return the stolen goods, ask for forgiveness, and vow to stop stealing. Then, he'd order the offender to make a long-term plan outlining how they would change their ways for the better.

Fortunately, it's working. Sifuna is implementing long-lasting change.

His methods are uncommon but he believes the only way to fight crime effectively is with faith.

To tackle crime, we need God.

Sifuna told The Standard, "We cannot do this by ourselves. We need God’s intervention in everything that we are doing as the police force. To tackle crime, we need God.

The police chief is a strong believer in second chances. He always offers offenders an opportunity to receive counselling before proceeding with jail time. Upon release, Sifuna claims many of the criminals have confessed and turned away from crime.

Policing with the bible isn't the chief's only passion. He has also set up a shelter for children of abuse and oversees an orphanage in the area.

Mwangi Nderitu, a pastor at Alshadai Restoration ministries, says Sifuna is “a whole new definition of a police officer.”
