The Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie have been hosting an annual door-to-door campaign to collect food for the Grande Prairie and area Salvation Army Community Food Bank for almost 30 years, and this year it’s going virtual.

The event usually involves 1,000 volunteers canvassing the entire city of Grande Prairie as well as nearby county residents. Last year was the largest yet, with 47 tons of food donated and stored in three hours.

The Rotary Clubs report that the need for food and other essential items in our city is growing. In 2019 there was a 25% increase in the usage of community meal services and a 40% increase in the need for food hampers.

This year, the Rotary clubs are adjusting their approach to the campaign that keeps to social distancing protocols with a virtual food bank drive. Instead of a one-day event, the online event will take place from Sept. 10-15.

At gpfooddrive.ca, people will be able to shop in the online store to purchase items (donate funds) for the Food Bank, fill a hamper, or make a financial donation.

The food drive also needs helping to get the word out. They’re asking people to visit their Facebook page, like their page, share their posts, and help them grow their online community. As well, people can phone a friend and share the message.

Instead of their traditional Media Kick Off Event, this year will be a call for local businesses and community members to sponsor Virtual Campaign. If you can help them reach their sponsorship goal by supporting a $300 or $500 donation. Email donate@gpfooddrive.ca for further details.
