Over Thanksgiving Long Weekend, Alberta RCMP Officers were busy handing out traffic tickets as part of Operation Impact 2020. 

In 2019, there were four fatalities and 177 injuries as a result of 305 motor vehicle collisions over the course of the long weekend. The RCMP hoped to crack down on that number in 2020. 

Between October 9, and 12th of 2020, there were five fatalities and 207 motor vehicle collisions in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. 

RCMP issued a total of 2,870 traffic safety tickets including: 

  • 1,914 speeding charges 
  • 27 excessive speeding charges (more than 50km/hr over the posted limit) 
  • 83 driving without a seatbelt charges 
  • 96 impaired driving charges 
  • 71 distracted driving charges 

In total the RCMP received 106 phone calls from the public notifying them of dangerous driving or suspected impaired drivers. Charges were laid for 15 of the 106 reported calls.
