The three Wise Men brought Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but one of those gifts is in danger of becoming extinct.

The world is seeing a decrease in the trees (Boswellia sacra) that provide Frankincense oil. The combination of human and animal demand strains the already few trees growing in Oman, Yemen and the Horn of Africa.

Frankincense is known for its healing properties and is commonly used in skincare products and as an essential oil, leaving the trees overused and in poor quality. The organization Save Frankincense says in a Facebook post that they expect the trees to be extinct in 20-30 years.

Frankincense is the oil from a tree that can be found both to the west and the east of Bethlehem, the town that is observed as the place of Jesus' birth. The sap from these trees is taken and processed for its ability to reduce inflammation. the frankincense tree has the ability to frow in harsh climates with little water and is a sturdy tree. It has received a near threatened classification from the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
