The Federal and Provincial government's are kicking in an extra $87 million to help out daycare's around Alberta.

Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Ahmed Hussen, says the safe re-opening of child care services means there's added costs, as they adjust to the new challenges they face.

"That is why our government, the Government of Canada is providing $625 million to provinces and territories to help ensure there is enough safe child care spaces available to parents as they safely return to work."

Alberta Minister of Children's Services, Rebecca Schulz, says the cash is aimed at making sure they can keep their facilities clean and well staffed.

"This will ensure that child care centres, daycare's, out of school care centres, approved family day homes and pre-schools can adhere to health and safety guidelines put forward by our Chief Medical Officer of Health and parents can absolutely be assured their children are receiving the best possible care."

Schulz, says money for daycare's, out of school care centres, approved day homes and pre-schools, will see their funding go up from $109 per space to $200 per space, plus a $2,500 grant per child care centre.

In a release the Province says the grants will simply make it easier and more affordable for child care centres to operate.

These grants will help operators purchase additional cleaning supplies, safety equipment, and any other upgrades necessary to comply with health guidelines without increasing parent fees.

Centres will have to be open after receiving the October payment to receive November’s grant payment.

Of the $85 million in total funding, $72 million will come from the federal government’s Safe Restart Funding agreement, $8.2 million from the bilateral agreement and the remaining $6.9 million from Phase three of the Child Care Relief program.

In May, the province announced the Child Care Relief program, providing $17.8 million to ensure child care centres are ready to safely restart and support families through Alberta’s economic recovery.
