Sherwood Park's Terry Fikowski recently accomplished something remarkable.

After his gym closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 73-year-old decided to go for daily walks instead.

"I walked every street in Sherwood Park," said Fikowski. "Every cul de sac, every condominium, apartment project, commercial area, industrial area; from Highway 16 in the north to Wye Road, Anthony Henday on the west and Highway 21 on the east."

He never drove anywhere and was walking for four to five hours each day, rain or shine.

"It took me a total of 116 days and I walked in excess of 2,000 kilometres," added Fikowski. "I averaged, every day, 20,000 steps."

To keep track of his journey, he used a map of Sherwood Park and a highlighter – the full trek spanning from Mar.19 to July 12.

Fikowski came across many new people while walking, even discovering some hidden gems. Salisbury Village stuck out to him the most.

"Once you get in there, the parkways and the trails and the stormwater ponds... I was very impressed, I did not expect to see that there," he explained.

Even though he finished his challenge, Fikowski continues to walk every day and encourages others to explore what Sherwood Park and surrounding communities have to offer.

"I think anybody could do it," he concluded.
